Promoting good practice in criminal justice

About Good Practice

We want to promote good practice that helps to reduce re-offending in communities across the country click on any of the links below for further information:

Accommodation / Education, training and employment / Health / Drugs & Alcohol / Finance, benefit & debt / Children & families / Attitudes, thinking & behaviour /

Good practice examples: Accommodation

Getting offenders into stable accommodation is a critical step towards successful rehabilitation.  We want to promote projects that offer vulnerable people the opportunity to improve their quality of life by providing a stable environment which enables greater independence.

Good practice examples: Education, training and employment

Lack of employment is one of the major factors associated with re-offending. We want to promote projects that address offenders' education, training and employment needs.

Good practice examples: Health

Offenders struggle to access health facilities and therefore are at a greater risk of continued offending. We want to promote projects that help offenders gain access to appropriate health services in custody and the community diverting offenders with serious mental healthcare needs to appropriate health services.

Good practice examples: Finance, benefit and debt

Low incomes, debt, disrupted access to benefits advice and insufficient income on release from prison all add to the problem. We want to promote projects that supports ex-offenders and serving prisoners to overcome social and financial exclusion.

Good practice examples: Children and families

Many offenders’ relationships are broken or fragmented as a result of their offending, leaving their families unsupported, and increasing the likelihood of inter-generational offending, mental health and financial problems.  We want to promote projects that enable children and families to play a significant role in supporting an offender to make and sustain changes which reduce re-offending.

Good practice examples: Attitudes, thinking and behaviour

One of the stepping stones to rehabilitating offenders is to help them overcome negative and destructive patterns of thinking and behaviour. We want to promote projects that address offender’s attitudes, thinking and behaviour.
